An adult mask for portable nebuliser needs to be light weight
January 29, 2015It can be a frightening experience to have to use medical equipment if you are ill for the first time. Things such as the adult probe clip oximeter sensor, a child or adult nebuliser mask, or an adult nebuliser mask for portable nebuliser need to be light and easy to use so as not to appear too daunting.
A nebuliser is a device that converts liquid into aerosol droplets suitable for inhalation. Nebulisers use oxygen, compressed air or ultrasonic power to break up medication solutions and deliver a therapeutic dose of aerosol particles directly to the lungs. The use of nebulisers in the community is declining. However, they may still be useful in certain clinical situations, and are preferred by some patients.
Nebuliser systems
A wide variety of nebulisers is available. Nebulisers can be driven by compressed gas (jet nebuliser) or by an ultrasonically vibrating crystal (ultrasonic nebuliser). Conventional jet nebulisers waste a great deal of the drug during expiration and ultrasonic nebulisers are becoming more common.
Many medications are available as inhaled treatments. Inhaled methods deliver medication directly to the airway, which is helpful for lung diseases. The patient and healthcare provider can choose from a variety of delivery systems for inhaling medication.
A nebulizer delivery system consists of a nebulizer (small plastic bowl with a screw-top lid) and a source for compressed air. The airflow to the nebulizer changes the medication solution to a mist. When inhaled correctly, the medication has a better chance to reach the small airways. This increases the medication's effectiveness.
Use of nebulisers in various clinical conditions
Nebulisers are used for emergency and domiciliary treatment of many respiratory diseases. Indications for nebuliser use include the management of exacerbations and long-term treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), management of cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, HIV/AIDS and symptomatic relief in palliative care.
How to assemble the nebulizer and air compressor
- Place the compressor where it can safely reach its power source and where you can reach the ON/OFF switch.
- Wash your hands prior to preparing each treatment.
- Use a clean nebulizer.
- Measure the correct dose of medication and other solutions prescribed by your physician. Add these to the nebulizer.
- Connect the air tubing from the compressor to the nebulizer base. Make sure all connections are snug.
- Attach a mask to the nebulizer.
- Turn the compressor on and check the nebulizer for misting.
Taking the nebulized treatment
- Hold the mask to the face so both the nose and mouth is covered. The mask may be secured to the head with an elastic band.
- Turn the compressor on to start the mist. The head should be held upright. This correctly positions the nebulizer and opens the airway.
- Assure deep breathing throughout the treatment.
- Continue the treatment until the onset of inconsistent nebulization, i.e. sputtering.
The adult nebuliser mask C28 C29 C30 as well as the adult probe oximeter sensor both fall into the category of essential medical equipment for home use and such they need to be well maintained and used properly.
